‘Emong’ gains strength, now a tropical storm

The state weather bureau said Emong has further gained strength as it rapidly moves toward the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. PAGASA earlier warned that the tropical depression will develop into tropical storm on Sunday afternoon. Emong’s eye was last estimated based on all available data at 430 kilometers east northeast of Basco, Batanes. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometer per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. Despite Emong intensifying into tropical storm, PAGASA said there are still no tropical cyclone warning signals raised. Within 24 hours and 48 hours, Emong is expected to move outside the Philippine area of responsibility northeast of Basco, Batanes.
