New York explosion: 29 wounded

29 individuals wounded in a bomb explosion happened on Saturday in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood.

On Saturday night, a bomb exploded at about 8:30 p.m. on 23rd Street in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood wounding 29 individuals.

According to New York Fire Department the explosion happened in a populous area of Manhattan characterized by restaurants, subway stations, stores and art galleries.

The incident happened after a bomb explosion in Seaside Park, New Jersey but New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said that the two explosions are not related.

The incident is believed to be an intentional act. However, authorities have not found yet evidences or proofs that may link to a terrorist group.

Another explosive device was discovered and removed before it could explode on 27th Street. It was similar to homemade bombs that exploded at the Boston Marathon in 2013 killing and injuring more than 260 individuals.

Now, there are  more than 1,000 National Guard and State Police officers sent by  Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to patrol in the city. Officials said that the New York Police Department (NYPD) officers are on alert and also increasing patrols  for this week’s meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.

The 29 individuals who were injured have been released from the hospital. Many of the injuries were caused by shrapnel from the explosion. Witnesses said the impact came from inside a dumpster near the Avenue of Americas.

“We really were very lucky that there were no fatalities at the time”, New York City governor Andrew Cuomo said.

Cuomo encouraged the people of New York to stay calm and go about their business as normal. He also reassured them that the city is once again safe.

“We’re not going to let them win”, Mr Cuomo said at the scene.

“We’re not going to let them instill fear.
